Way Back Wednesday--Will you be my BF 4/ever? ____yes ____no

Theme: BFF (Best Friends Forever!)- show us your best friends from your past...Bonus Points: you and your friend have a "Best Friends" locket necklace in the picture.

"When I was little, I used to believe in the concept of one best friend, and then I started to become a woman. And then I found out that if you allow your heart to open up, God would show you the best in many friends. One friend is needed when you're going through things with your man. Another friend is needed when you're going through things with your mom. Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.

One friend will say let's pray together, another let's cry together, another let's fight together, another let's walk away together.

One friend will meet your spiritual need, another your shoe fetish, another your love for movies, another will be with you in your season of confusion, another will be your clarifier, another the wind beneath your wings.

But whatever their assignment in your life, on whatever the occasion, on whatever the day, or wherever you need them to meet you with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back, or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself ... those are your best friends.

It may all be wrapped up in one woman, but for many it's wrapped up in several... one from 7th grade, one from high school, several from the college years, a couple from old jobs, several from church, on some days your mother, on some days your neighbor, on others your sisters, and on some days your daughters, or it could be the kindness of a stranger - starting a new friendship."

I had one best friend for my entire childhood. Her name is Kelly. Coincidentially, she sent me the above message in an email yesterday. We are still great friends, though time and distance have reduced us to an occassional email and phone calls only on each other's birthdays. It doesn't matter, because true friends stand the test of time. You can not talk to each other for years, and with one phone call, it is like no time has passed. You have seen Kelly before on the WBW Family Vacation and Birthday segments, but here are some more photos of the two of us. We were inseparable. We lived about one mile apart in a small rural community (read: redneck). We had go-carts and mopeds that we were allowed to drive (alone) to each others' houses by the time we were 10 years old. She had a trampoline that we lived on every summer. I lived next door to her crush so we spent a lot of time playing in my yard so she could see and be seen. All in all, we made some fantastic childhood memories.

Here we are in our Dallas Cowboy cheerleader shirts in 1981:

At some academic awards ceremony in 1982: (Don't you love the pleated skirts and my bow tie?)And with her adorable son Hunter in 2002:

Kelly moved away to South Carolina just as we were entering high school. (Her family got some sense and returned to Texas years later.) It was time for a new BF. Enter Ruth, the new girl at school. The girl from Houston, who was a little wilder, a little more experienced than us small town folks. We hated each other on site, mainly because she wanted my boyfriend and she was pretty. After we traded the boyfriend back and forth a few times, he dumped us both for my interim BF. Well, that bonded Ruth and me together....two scorned girls united by a mutual contempt for the new couple. And a new BFF was formed. We were the closest of friends for the rest of high school. She had a huge influence on me, which was not neccessarily a good thing--we got into our share of trouble. We drifted apart shortly after high school, and I haven't talked to her in several years. You have met Ruth once before on WBW Bad Hair Day. Here are some more photos of the big-hair duo. (I had to scan from my yearbook because I couldn't find actual photos. Mama Duck, I may not have a BF locket, but the "BF Always" written in the yearbook should get me some bonus points.)

During my late high school and early college years, my BF was Dawn. She was the crazy girl that everyone was friends with or at least wanted to be. She was the girl that your parents loved, but they weren't sure why. We are still friends, but rarely see each other. We had some great times together. Her boyfriend at the time was in a band, and we thought we were so cool when we would go to local college clubs where they were performing and hang out with them. In retrospect, NO ONE was impressed with this but us. She had a pet rat name Herpes (because Her Pees on everything) that she bought while on a trip with me and my parents. In addition, she was a master at torturing my little sister, which was great for me. Dawn made her first appearance on this site on WBW Family Vacays, but you can't really see her. Here's another one.

And finally, here is my current BF, who will be my BF 4/ever. (I won't get all mushy again since I just did that on his
birthday.)
